What to know about dental veneers

Dental veneers cover the front surface of a tooth to change its appearance. They may help with selected concerns about color or shape, but deciding whether to use them starts with tooth health, the bite and the alternatives.

Are veneers the same as crowns?

No. Veneers mainly cover the front of a tooth; crowns cover more of the tooth and may be recommended for structural damage. Veneers do not replace missing teeth. Our dental veneers treatment page explains the practice’s approach.

Are veneers reversible?

Veneer preparation generally removes enamel, so it should be treated as a lasting commitment. Ask how much preparation is proposed, whether a more conservative option would meet your goal and what future repair or replacement could involve.

Should I compare veneers with bonding or aligners?

Yes. Composite bonding can address selected smaller changes. Clear aligners change tooth position. Ask which problem the proposed treatment solves before choosing a material.

What should I ask at a veneer consultation?

  • What concerns can this plan address?

  • What happens to the existing enamel?

  • How does my bite affect the recommendation?

  • What maintenance and future replacement should I expect?

  • Can I see relevant examples of your work?
