What is a diastema?

A diastema is a space between teeth. A long-standing gap may simply be part of your smile, but a new or widening gap in adult teeth should be evaluated before cosmetic treatment.

Why can a gap develop?

Tooth size, missing teeth and the relationship between teeth and jaw size can contribute to spacing. The location and cause matter more than measuring the gap alone. New spacing, loose teeth or bleeding gums also makes a gum-health evaluation important.

Does every gap need to be closed?

No. If the teeth and gums are healthy and you like your smile, closing a stable gap may not be necessary. If you want a change, the decision should include the bite, tooth proportions and the amount of healthy tooth structure involved.

Can bonding close a gap between front teeth?

Composite bonding may be an option for selected small spaces. The practice’s bonding article includes actual cases and explains its approach to shape and contours. Making teeth wider will not be the right solution for every gap.

When might aligners or veneers make sense?

Clear aligners move teeth, while veneers change the visible surface. These approaches solve different problems. Ask whether the goal is to change tooth position, tooth shape or both, and compare the maintenance and tooth preparation involved.

How can I discuss a tooth gap in Jacksonville?

Contact C.J. Henley, DMD on Hendricks Avenue near San Marco. Bring photographs that show when the gap appeared if it has changed. A dental examination should establish tooth and gum health before choosing among cosmetic treatment options.
