The Cosmetic Dentistry Guide
Straight answers about veneers, bonding, whitening and the materials behind them, written and reviewed by a practicing dentist. Every number links to the study it came from.
Cosmetic dentistry changes how your teeth look: their color, shape, size or position. The main options are whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns and clear aligners. This guide explains how long each lasts, how much tooth each one takes, and how to choose, using published research rather than marketing claims. For example, about 9 in 10 porcelain veneers are still in place after 10 years in the largest reviews.1,2
Start with what bothers you
The right treatment depends more on the problem than on the procedure, so start there.
| What you want to change | Often the first thing to consider | Read next |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow or dull teeth | Whitening, before anything else | Teeth whitening |
| A chip or uneven edge | Bonding | Veneers vs bonding |
| Small gaps or dark triangles between teeth | Bonding, including the Bioclear method | Veneers vs bonding |
| Crooked or crowded teeth | Clear aligners, sometimes followed by bonding or veneers | Clear aligners |
| Several teeth with the wrong shape, size or color | Veneers, porcelain or composite | Porcelain vs composite |
| Broken, heavily filled or root-canal-treated teeth | Crowns | Materials compared |
| Veneers that look fake or are failing | A careful redo | Veneer replacement |

How I approach cosmetic work
Plan the result first, take as little tooth as possible, and use the material that fits the job.
I'm a general dentist in San Marco, and I see every patient myself. For veneers, that means a mock-up in your mouth before any tooth is touched, so you can see and approve the shape. It means keeping preparation small, because veneers bonded to enamel last longest.6 And it means choosing the material case by case. You can see the results in our before and after gallery and case studies.

Common questions
What is the most conservative cosmetic option?
Usually whitening, then bonding. Both leave your natural tooth almost untouched. Veneers and crowns change more, and crowns remove the most tooth by far.5
How long do veneers last?
In the largest reviews, about 9 in 10 porcelain veneers are still in place after 10 years.1,2 See how long veneers last.
Is porcelain or composite better?
Porcelain lasts longer and stains less. Composite costs less up front and is easier to add to. See porcelain vs composite veneers.
Do veneers ruin your teeth?
Not when they are planned conservatively. See what happens to teeth under veneers and how much tooth is removed.
Does insurance cover cosmetic dentistry?
Usually not when the reason is purely appearance. Treatment that also repairs damage, such as a broken tooth, may be partly covered. See dental insurance.
