CJ Henley, DMD, PA   /   San Marco, Jacksonville   /   Serving Ponte Vedra and Nocatee

A Ponte Vedra Beach dentist worth the drive.
Implants, second opinions, and rebuilt smiles for Ponte Vedra and Nocatee.

We are not in Ponte Vedra. Our office is in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, about 19 to 26 miles from Ponte Vedra Beach, Sawgrass, Marsh Landing, Palm Valley, and Nocatee, or roughly 30 to 38 minutes without traffic. Ponte Vedra and Nocatee patients make that drive for dental implants one dentist places and restores, for a second opinion before a tooth comes out, for old crowns and bridges rebuilt properly, for porcelain veneers layered by a named ceramist, and for dentistry that fits a complicated medical history. In a dental emergency, call first: we see emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome.

Existing patients after hours: call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. Se habla español.

Ponte Vedra to San Marco

Why Ponte Vedra and Nocatee patients drive to San Marco, and when they shouldn’t.

Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee have plenty of dental offices close to home. Patients who drive half an hour to us usually want something specific: dental implants planned, placed, and finished by one dentist, an honest second opinion before a tooth is removed, failing crowns and bridges rebuilt to last, or dentistry that works around cancer treatment and serious medical conditions.

Start with honest geography. From Sawgrass Village or TPC Sawgrass we are about 21 to 23 miles away by A1A, Butler Boulevard, and I-95; from Marsh Landing about 19; from the Nocatee Town Center about 21 to 23 by Nocatee Parkway and I-95. Without traffic, that is about half an hour.

What makes the drive worth it is the kind of dentistry. Dr. Henley is a general dentist whose days are mostly restorative, implant, and complex work: dental implants he places and restores himself, rebuilding worn or failing crowns and bridges, porcelain veneers designed from a preview you approve, and dentistry for people whose health makes treatment harder. Patients come from across Florida and other states for that work, so a trip from Ponte Vedra is short by comparison.

And the honest part: if you just need a cleaning twice a year, a dentist a few minutes from home in 32082 or 32081 may suit you better. Many Ponte Vedra patients do implant, restorative, or cosmetic work here and keep a closer office for cleanings. Others make our general and family dentistry their dental home.

Dental implants for Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee patients

Dental implants for Ponte Vedra Beach: one dentist, from the 3D scan to the final tooth.

Dr. Henley places dental implants and makes the teeth that attach to them, so one dentist is responsible for the whole result, from planning on a 3D scan to the final crown, bridge, or full arch. We place single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), and snap-in implant overdentures, do the extractions and bone grafting that often come first, and make new dentures and partials with relines in our office.

One tooth

A single implant replaces one tooth without cutting down the teeth beside it. Compare the choices in dental bridge vs implant and the implant options table.

A whole arch: All-on-X or snap-in

All-on-X is a full arch of teeth screwed to several implants that only the dentist removes. A snap-in overdenture clips onto two or more implants and comes out to clean. Both are far more stable than a loose denture.

Planned in 3D, with fewer trips

The 3D scan shows bone, nerves, and sinuses before implant surgery. Most cases take a few months while bone heals; we keep the long appointments few for patients driving in from Ponte Vedra. See the implant process.

New dentures, partials, and relines

We make new complete and partial dentures and reline them in our office, and we tell you plainly when a reline is a better answer than surgery.

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years.1 Radiation to the jaws, some bone medications, uncontrolled diabetes, and heavy smoking change the risk, and we explain alternatives. Read about osteoporosis medications and dental health, what affects implant fees, and the dental implant FAQ.

Second opinions and full-mouth rebuilding

Told a tooth has to come out, or that your dental work can’t be fixed? Get a second opinion first.

Implants are excellent, but they are not always the first answer. Some teeth that have been written off can be saved with crowns, bonding, or orthodontics, and some failing crowns and bridges only need part of the mouth redone. A second-opinion exam tells you which teeth can stay, which can’t, and why, before anything is removed.

When a tooth is worth saving

A front tooth with its own gum and bone keeps a natural gumline that is very hard to recreate around an implant. One of our patients was told her eroded front teeth had to be removed; orthodontics first, then layered e.max crowns, saved every one. We will also tell you when a tooth truly can’t be saved, and then plan the implant properly.

Old crowns and bridges that keep failing

Dark lines at the gum, decay under old crowns, bridges that keep coming loose, and teeth worn short by grinding (bruxism) are common in patients with decades of dental work. Patching one tooth at a time often fails again. When the problem is the whole arch, we plan the whole arch.

  1. Find the cause

Decay, gums, bite, grinding, or the design itself. A comprehensive exam with 3D imaging when needed covers all of them.

  2. Show you the options

Save, repair, or replace with an implant, tooth by tooth, with the trade-offs in plain language and the fee in writing.

  3. Rebuild in a sensible order

Gums and decay first, then implants or crowns, then the final teeth. Read what happens at a crown appointment.

  4. Protect the result

A night guard when you grind, and checkups to catch small problems early.

A second-opinion exam doesn’t commit you to treatment. Bring old X-rays, records, or a treatment plan from another office, and we will answer as much as possible on the first visit. Longer write-ups are in our case studies.

Real patients from our San Marco office

Implants, saved teeth, and rebuilt arches: three of our own patients.

One patient needed implants, one was told she needed implants and didn’t, and one needed a whole arch rebuilt after years of grinding. Drag each slider to compare before and after.

After: new implant-supported PFZ bridges and crowns with a contoured gumline Before: failing crowns and bridges with worn, discolored upper teeth

Failed crowns and bridges, replaced with implants

Several old crowns and bridges were breaking down. Teeth that couldn’t be saved were replaced with dental implants, a laser reshaped the gumline, and the upper arch was rebuilt with porcelain-fused-to-zirconia bridges and crowns. Read the full case.

After: e.max restorations restoring the length and shape of eroded front teeth Before: severe enamel erosion and worn, shortened front teeth

Told she needed implants: every tooth saved

Acid erosion had worn her front teeth short and thin, and she was told extraction and implants were the only option. Orthodontics first, then layered e.max crowns, kept every tooth and her natural gumline. Read the full case.

After: full upper arch restored with crowns and three-quarter crowns Before: flat, uneven upper teeth worn down by bruxism

An upper arch worn flat by grinding, rebuilt

Grinding had flattened every upper tooth. Full and three-quarter porcelain-fused-to-zirconia crowns rebuilt length, shape, and bite together, and a night guard now protects them. Read what bruxism is, or the full case.

More cases are in our before and after gallery and the longer write-ups in case studies.

Cosmetic dentistry for Ponte Vedra Beach patients

Porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry: previewed first, layered by hand.

Our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions. Before any tooth is prepared, you see a mock-up of the new shape in your own mouth and approve it, so the smile is designed around your face rather than a template.

A named ceramist, not an anonymous lab

Layered e.max lets light through the edges the way enamel does. Read how we choose materials in porcelain vs composite veneers.

Three visits over about a month

Plan and preview, prepare with temporaries, then try in and bond. We schedule them so you aren’t driving in from Ponte Vedra for small steps. See the veneer process.

Redos and second opinions

Veneers or crowns that look bulky, opaque, or too white can be redone. Our page for Jacksonville Beach patients explains why veneers look fake and how a redo works.

Sometimes veneers aren’t the answer

Teeth whitening, composite bonding, or clear aligners may get you there with less treatment. Read our approach to cosmetic dentistry and smile design.

A 2021 review of 25 studies estimated that about 95.5 percent of porcelain veneers were still in place at 10 years.2 Grinding is the main threat, so we check for it first. More in how long veneers last.

When your health is part of the dental plan

Dental care around cancer treatment, bone medications, and complex medical histories.

Many Ponte Vedra and Nocatee patients see physicians at Mayo Clinic, Baptist, and other Jacksonville hospitals. If you face cancer treatment, take medications that affect bone or bleeding, or live with a condition that makes dentistry harder, the dental plan has to fit your medical care, and we work with your physicians wherever they practice.

Head and neck cancer dental care

Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises a dental visit about a month before cancer treatment starts.3 We see patients before, during, and after head and neck cancer treatment, including dry mouth and jaw stiffness after radiation.

Bone medications, blood thinners, diabetes

These change how we plan extractions, implants, and surgery. Read about complex and medically involved care, osteoporosis medications, and physician referrals.

Screening at every comprehensive exam

A comprehensive exam includes an oral cancer screening of the tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and neck.

Anxious, or need a gentler pace?

Oral sedation is available for some anxious patients; read about sedation dentistry. Jaw pain is covered on our TMJ treatment page.

Dentist for Nocatee families

Nocatee families: one dentist for everyone, ages 2 to 102.

We see children, parents, and grandparents in the same office, so a Nocatee family can book back-to-back visits and see one dentist who knows everyone’s history. Spanish is spoken in our office.

Families who make the drive from Nocatee and Ponte Vedra usually do so because a parent or grandparent is already a patient for implants, crowns, or medical-complexity care, and it is easier to keep everyone together. Read about children’s dental care and general and family dentistry.

If your child just needs routine cleanings and you would rather stay close to the Nocatee Town Center, a nearby office may suit you better, and we will say so. When a child has a broken or knocked-out tooth, call us first: we see dental emergencies the same day during office hours.

Emergency dentist for Ponte Vedra and Nocatee

Same-day dental emergencies, if you call first.

If you have a toothache, a chipped or broken tooth, a lost crown, swelling, a loose implant crown, or a broken denture, call 904.398.1549 as early in the day as you can. We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, including new patients. Visits are call-first, not walk-in, so we can hold a chair and guide you on the drive from Ponte Vedra Beach or Nocatee.

What we see the same day

A bad toothache, a broken or cracked tooth, a lost crown, filling, or veneer, an abscess or swelling, a knocked-out tooth, and broken dentures or loose implant crowns.

After hours

We don’t have weekend hours. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616, after hours. New patients should follow the first-aid steps on our after-hours page and call 904.398.1549 when we open.

Go to an ER first if

you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling near the eye or down the neck, a fever with facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop with pressure, or a possible broken jaw. From Ponte Vedra, Mayo Clinic’s emergency department (4500 San Pablo Road South) and the 24-hour emergency room at Baptist Medical Center Beaches (1350 13th Avenue South, Jacksonville Beach) are both open around the clock. Call 911 if breathing is affected, then call us about the tooth. See ER or dentist?

Your first visit

Making the first visit count when you’re driving in from Ponte Vedra.

New patients are scheduled for about two hours: roughly an hour with Dr. Henley and an hour in hygiene, adjusted to what you need. You leave knowing what we found, your options, and the fee, so the next trip is for treatment.

  1. Tell us why you’re coming

An implant consultation, a second opinion, and a toothache start differently. Fill out our new-patient forms before the day.

  2. History and exam

Medications, your physicians, and a full exam of teeth, gums, bite, and old work.

  3. Photos and imaging

Photos, X-rays, and 3D imaging when a question needs it, such as implant planning.

  4. A written plan and fee

Findings, alternatives, and the order of treatment, before anything begins.

Cost and insurance

What will it cost, and do you take my insurance?

Fees depend on what you need. We give you the fee before treatment begins, so nothing is a surprise.

We are an out-of-network practice. Some dental plans cover part of crowns, implants, dentures, and emergency visits, often with a frequency limit; purely cosmetic veneers are usually not covered. We can help you understand how to use your benefits; you are responsible for amounts your plan does not pay. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees and payment arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee patients.

Is your office in Ponte Vedra?

No. We are in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207, just off Emerson Street. From Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee it is about 19 to 26 miles, depending on where you start.

How long is the drive from Ponte Vedra Beach?

About 30 to 36 minutes from Sawgrass, TPC Sawgrass, or Marsh Landing without traffic, by A1A or Butler Boulevard and I-95 north to Emerson Street. From the southern end of Ponte Vedra Beach it is closer to 38 minutes. Allow more time at rush hour.

How long is the drive from Nocatee?

About 30 to 33 minutes without traffic, by Nocatee Parkway west to US 1 and then I-95 north to Emerson Street. That is about 21 to 23 miles from central Nocatee and the Nocatee Town Center.

Why would I drive past Ponte Vedra dentists to see you?

Usually for work that takes planning: dental implants placed and restored by one dentist, a second opinion before a tooth is removed, rebuilding failing crowns and bridges or teeth worn by grinding, porcelain veneers made by a named ceramist, or care around cancer treatment and medical conditions. For routine cleanings, a closer office may suit you, and we will say so.

Do you place dental implants yourself?

Yes. Dr. Henley places dental implants and restores them in our office, including single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), snap-in implant overdentures, and extractions with bone grafting, so one dentist is responsible for both the implant and the tooth on it. If a case is better handled elsewhere, we tell you and coordinate the referral.

What should I ask before getting dental implants?

Ask who places the implant and who makes the final tooth, whether it is planned on a 3D scan, whether the tooth could be saved instead, what happens to the bone after an extraction, and how grinding and your medications change the plan. In our office, one dentist does both the surgery and the final tooth.

How long do dental implants last?

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, radiation to the jaws, some bone medications, and grinding change the risk, so we review your health and protect the result with checkups and a night guard when it is needed.

I was told my tooth has to be pulled. Can it be saved?

Sometimes. Some teeth that have been written off can be saved with a crown, bonding, or orthodontics, and keeping a front tooth keeps a natural gumline. A second-opinion exam tells you which teeth can stay and which can’t. If a tooth truly can’t be saved, we plan the implant properly.

Can you replace old crowns and bridges that keep failing?

Yes. When crowns and bridges keep breaking, decaying, or coming loose, we find the cause, whether decay, gums, bite, or grinding, and rebuild in a sensible order, sometimes a whole arch at once with crowns, bridges, or implants. You get the plan and fee in writing before anything begins.

Do you do porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry?

Yes. Our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions, from a mock-up you approve before any tooth is prepared. Veneers usually take about three visits over about a month. We also offer whitening, bonding, and clear aligners when they are the better choice.

I see doctors at Mayo Clinic or Baptist. Will you work with them?

Yes. We work with your physicians wherever they practice. Bone medications, blood thinners, diabetes, transplants, and cancer treatment all change the dental plan, so bring your medication list and your doctors’ names to your first visit.

Do you treat patients going through head and neck cancer treatment?

Yes. Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson and sees patients before, during, and after radiation and chemotherapy. Ideally we see you about a month before treatment begins. Tell us your treatment dates when you call.

Do you see children from Nocatee, and does anyone speak Spanish?

Yes to both. We see patients from age 2 to 102, so Nocatee and Ponte Vedra families can come together, and Spanish is spoken in our office. Se habla español.

Is there an emergency dentist for Ponte Vedra that sees new patients the same day?

We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome. Please call 904.398.1549 first rather than walking in, as early in the day as you can, so we can hold time for you and tell you what to do on the drive from Ponte Vedra Beach or Nocatee.

What if I have a dental emergency at night or on a weekend?

Go to an ER for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever with swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. New patients should use first-aid steps and call 904.398.1549 when we open. We don’t have weekend hours.

Which ER is closest if I’m in Ponte Vedra?

Mayo Clinic’s emergency department at 4500 San Pablo Road South and the 24-hour emergency room at Baptist Medical Center Beaches, 1350 13th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach, are both open around the clock. Call 911 if breathing is affected.

Do you take my insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice and can help you understand how to use your benefits. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees before scheduling. We give you the fee for any treatment before it begins.

Which Ponte Vedra and Nocatee areas and zip codes do you serve?

We see patients from Ponte Vedra Beach, Sawgrass, Marsh Landing, and Palm Valley (32082) and from Nocatee (32081), plus the Jacksonville Beaches, San Marco, the Southside, Mandarin, St. Johns County, and the rest of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
