Riverside and Avondale to San Marco
Why Riverside, Avondale, and Ortega patients choose a San Marco dentist.
From Five Points or Memorial Park, our office is one bridge away: across the Fuller Warren Bridge, down San Marco Boulevard, and onto Hendricks Avenue. Patients from Riverside, Avondale, Murray Hill, and Ortega choose us because they want one dentist who knows them, time with that dentist at every exam, and a practice that can handle everything from a child’s first visit to a cracked molar to care around a serious illness.
Plenty of Jacksonville dental offices sit along Park Street and Roosevelt Boulevard. What is different here is how the care is organized. Dr. Henley sees every patient himself, a new-patient visit includes about an hour with him, and treatment is planned in writing, with the fee, before anything begins. Read about our general and family dentistry and what goes into a comprehensive dental exam.
Being this close matters most when care needs more than one visit: a crown with a temporary in between, a child who needs a few short appointments, follow-ups for dry mouth or oral lichen planus, or regular visits around head and neck cancer treatment. From Riverside it is a ten-minute trip, not a half day.
Patients also come from much farther, across Florida and from other states, for dental implants, porcelain veneers, and second opinions. Riverside, Avondale, and Ortega families get the same dentist with a much shorter drive.

Family dentist for Riverside, Avondale, and Ortega
A dental home for Riverside and Avondale families, from age 2 to 102.
We see children, parents, and grandparents in the same office, so a Riverside or Avondale family can book back-to-back visits and see one dentist who knows everyone’s history. Exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, crowns, and an oral cancer screening at every comprehensive exam are all done here, and Spanish is spoken in our office.
Exams with the dentist, not a quick look
A comprehensive exam covers teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, old dental work, and an oral cancer screening, with digital and 3D imaging when a question needs it.
Cleanings and gum care
Hygiene visits are scheduled around what your gums need, and we send you home with a plan. Our home care instructions and toothpaste guide cover the rest.
Children’s dental care
Children from age 2 are welcome, including first visits, cleanings, fillings, and broken or knocked-out teeth. Read about children’s dental care.
Older adults and changing health
Medications, dry mouth, and new diagnoses change dental needs. Read about osteoporosis medications, GLP-1 medications and your teeth, and dental insurance after retirement.
Cracked teeth, old fillings, and crowns
It hurts when you bite? Cracked teeth, old fillings, and crowns, fixed properly.
Sharp pain when you bite, sensitivity to cold, an old silver filling with a crack line beside it, or a crown with a dark edge at the gum are among the most common reasons Riverside and Avondale patients call us. Most are caught early with a careful exam, and most are fixed with a filling, bonding, or a crown made by a dental lab.
| What you notice | Usual cause | What we usually do |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp pain when you bite down, then it lets go | A cracked tooth, often beside a large old filling | Find the crack, then protect the tooth with a crown or partial crown before it splits |
| Sensitivity after a new filling | Often a high bite or an irritated nerve that settles | Check and adjust the bite; see tooth pain after a filling |
| An old silver filling with dark lines around it | Leaking edges, new decay, or a cracking tooth | Replace it only when it is failing, with bonding or a crown depending on how much tooth is left |
| A crown with a dark line or gap at the gum | A metal edge showing, a receding gum, or decay under the crown | Check for decay; repair or replace the crown |
| Teeth getting shorter, flatter, or chipping | Grinding or clenching (bruxism) | Rebuild worn teeth and make a night guard; see teeth grinding |
Crowns made by a dental lab
Our crowns are made by a dental laboratory, not milled in the office, so a crown usually takes two visits with a temporary in between. That lets us choose the right material for the tooth, such as layered e.max where looks matter most or zirconia where strength matters most. Read why you might need a crown, what happens at a crown appointment, and why crown fees vary in Jacksonville.
When a tooth needs more
If a crack or decay reaches the nerve, the tooth may need a root canal, which we refer to an endodontist we trust and coordinate with, then finish with the crown here. If a tooth can’t be saved, we explain the choices: an implant, a bridge, or a partial. Toothaches are covered on our cavity pain page.
Real patients from our San Marco office
From a healthy smile on a budget to full zirconia: three of our own patients.
Not every smile needs veneers. One patient needed decay treated quickly and affordably, one needed only bonding, and one needed strong crowns for a heavy bite. Drag each slider to compare before and after.
Ready for the Navy: a healthy smile on a budget
Years of soda had left widespread decay. In about four visits, teeth that couldn’t be saved were removed, the rest were rebuilt with tooth-colored composite, and a flexible partial replaced the missing teeth. Read the full case.
Chipped front teeth, fixed with bonding
Chips along the biting edges made the smile line uneven. Tooth-colored composite bonding rebuilt the edges with little or no drilling. Read the full case.
Full zirconia crowns for a heavy bite
Worn, uneven teeth and heavy bite forces called for strength. Full-contour zirconia crowns with natural surface texture rebuilt the smile, and a night guard protects them. Read the full case.
More cases are in our before and after gallery and the longer write-ups in case studies.

Oral medicine and complex care close to home
Burning mouth, lichen planus, dry mouth, and dental care around serious illness.
Some mouth problems need diagnosis and regular follow-up rather than a single repair, and some patients need dental care that fits cancer treatment or a complicated medical history. For Riverside and Avondale patients, a ten-minute trip makes those repeat visits far easier, and we work with your physicians wherever they practice.
Oral medicine
Burning, soreness, white or red patches, and sores that won’t heal need a diagnosis. Read about oral medicine and diagnosis, burning mouth syndrome, and oral lichen planus.
Head and neck cancer dental care
Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises a dental visit about a month before cancer treatment starts.1 We see patients before, during, and after head and neck cancer treatment, including dry mouth and jaw stiffness after radiation.
Medically complex patients
Blood thinners, bone medications, diabetes, and transplants change the plan. Read about complex and medically involved care and physician referrals.
Jaw pain and grinding
Clicking, locking, or aching jaws are covered on our TMJ treatment page. Oral sedation is available for some anxious patients; read about sedation dentistry.
Implants, veneers, and cosmetic dentistry
The work patients drive across Florida for, ten minutes from Riverside.
Dr. Henley places dental implants and makes the teeth that go on them, and our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions from a mock-up you approve first. Patients drive in from Ponte Vedra, the Beaches, and other states for this work; from Avondale it is a short trip.
Dental implants
Single teeth, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), and snap-in implant overdentures, planned on a 3D scan. See the questions to ask before implants and our dental implants page.
Porcelain veneers and redos
Previewed in your mouth first and made in about three visits over about a month. Veneers that look fake can be redone; see veneer redos and second opinions and porcelain veneers.
Whitening and bonding
Teeth whitening and composite bonding often get you there with far less treatment, and clear aligners straighten teeth without brackets.
Dentures and partials
We make new complete and partial dentures and reline them in our office, and repair broken dentures as an emergency. Read our approach to cosmetic dentistry.
A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years,2 and a 2021 review of 25 studies estimated about 95.5 percent of porcelain veneers still in place at 10 years.3

Frequently asked questions
Questions from Riverside, Avondale, and Ortega patients.
How far is your office from Riverside?
About 3 to 4 miles. From Five Points, Memorial Park, or the Riverside Arts Market it is about 6 to 9 minutes without traffic, over the Fuller Warren Bridge and down San Marco Boulevard to 3675 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
How long is the drive from Avondale and Ortega?
About 12 to 14 minutes from Avondale and Murray Hill, and about 16 to 17 minutes from Ortega, without traffic, by Roosevelt Boulevard and I-95 across the Fuller Warren Bridge. Allow more time at rush hour.
Which bridge is fastest from Riverside?
Usually the Fuller Warren Bridge on I-95, then the San Marco Boulevard exit. From Brooklyn or downtown, the Acosta Bridge to San Marco Boulevard is about the same.
Are you accepting new patients from Riverside and Avondale?
Yes. New patients are welcome, including for same-day emergency visits during office hours. A first visit takes about two hours, with roughly an hour with Dr. Henley. Please call 904.398.1549 to schedule.
Can you be our family dentist?
Yes. We see patients from age 2 to 102, so children, parents, and grandparents can come to one office and see one dentist who knows everyone’s history. Spanish is spoken in our office.
What happens at a first visit?
A review of your health and medications, a full exam of teeth, gums, bite, and old dental work with an oral cancer screening, X-rays, a cleaning when it is appropriate, and a written plan with fees for anything we recommend.
My tooth hurts when I bite. Is it cracked?
It may be. Sharp pain on biting that lets go when you release is a classic sign of a cracked tooth, often next to a large old filling. Cracks grow, so call us: a crown or partial crown placed early can often keep the tooth from splitting.
My tooth is sensitive after a new filling. Is that normal?
Some sensitivity for a few days to a few weeks can be normal. Pain when you bite often means the filling is a little high and needs a quick adjustment. Pain that lingers or gets worse should be checked.
Should I replace my old silver fillings?
Not just because they are old. We replace a silver filling when it is leaking, has new decay around it, or the tooth beside it is cracking, using bonding or a crown depending on how much tooth is left.
Do you make same-day crowns?
No. Our crowns are made by a dental laboratory, so a crown usually takes two visits with a temporary in between. That lets us choose the material that suits each tooth, such as layered e.max or zirconia.
Do you do root canals?
We refer root canals to an endodontist we trust and coordinate the care, then restore the tooth with a crown in our office. We see painful teeth the same day during office hours to diagnose the problem and relieve pain.
Is there an emergency dentist near Riverside that sees new patients the same day?
We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome. Please call 904.398.1549 first rather than walking in, as early in the day as you can. From Riverside, Avondale, or Ortega you can usually be here within 20 minutes.
What if I have a dental emergency at night or on a weekend?
Go to an ER for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever with swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. New patients should use first-aid steps and call 904.398.1549 when we open. We don’t have weekend hours.
Which ER is closest if I’m in Riverside?
Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside at 1 Shircliff Way, Jacksonville, has an emergency department open 24 hours a day. Call 911 if breathing is affected.
Do you treat burning mouth, lichen planus, or dry mouth?
Yes. We diagnose and manage burning mouth syndrome, oral lichen planus, dry mouth, and other oral medicine problems, often over several follow-up visits, and we work with your physicians when medications or other conditions are involved.
Do you treat patients going through head and neck cancer treatment?
Yes. Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson and sees patients before, during, and after radiation and chemotherapy. Ideally we see you about a month before treatment begins.
Do you take my insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice and can help you understand how to use your benefits. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees before scheduling. We give you the fee for any treatment before it begins.
Which neighborhoods and zip codes do you serve?
We see patients from Riverside, Five Points, and Brooklyn (32204), Avondale, Murray Hill, and Fishweir (32205), and Ortega (32210), plus downtown, the Westside, San Marco, the Southside, Mandarin, and the rest of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
