CJ Henley, DMD, PA   /   San Marco, Jacksonville   /   Serving Orange Park and Fleming Island

An Orange Park and Fleming Island dentist, one bridge away.
Dental implants, dentures, and same-day emergencies over the Buckman Bridge.

We are not in Clay County. Our office is in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, about 16 miles from Orange Park and 20 to 22 miles from Fleming Island, or roughly half an hour without traffic: across the Buckman Bridge on I-295 and straight up San Jose Boulevard. Orange Park and Fleming Island patients make that drive for dental implants one dentist places and restores, for dentures and snap-in overdentures that finally fit, for second opinions on failing crowns and bridges, and for dentistry that works around a complicated medical history. In a dental emergency, call first: we see emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome.

Existing patients after hours: call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. Se habla español.

Orange Park and Fleming Island to San Marco

Why Orange Park and Fleming Island patients cross the river, and when they shouldn’t.

Orange Park, Fleming Island, and Oakleaf have plenty of dental offices close to home. Patients who make the half-hour drive to us usually want something specific: implants planned and finished by one dentist, a denture or overdenture that stays put, a second opinion on dental work that keeps failing, or care that fits cancer treatment or a serious medical condition.

Start with honest geography: our office is in Jacksonville’s San Marco neighborhood. From the Orange Park Mall or Kingsley Avenue we are about 16 to 18 miles away; from Eagle Harbor about 20; from the Fleming Island Town Center about 22, by US 17. Nearly every route is the same: I-295 east over the Buckman Bridge, then San Jose Boulevard north through Mandarin to Hendricks Avenue.

What makes the drive worth it is the kind of dentistry. Dr. Henley is a general dentist whose days are mostly restorative, implant, and complex work: dental implants he places and restores himself, new dentures and snap-in implant overdentures, rebuilding failing crowns and bridges, and dentistry for people whose health makes treatment harder. Patients come from across Florida and other states for that work, so a trip from Clay County is short by comparison.

And the honest part: if you just need a cleaning twice a year, a dentist a few minutes from home in 32073 or 32003 may suit you better. Many Orange Park and Fleming Island patients do implant or restorative work here and keep a closer office for cleanings. Others make our general and family dentistry their dental home.

Dental implants for Orange Park and Fleming Island patients

Dental implants for Orange Park and Fleming Island: one dentist, start to finish.

Dr. Henley places dental implants and makes the teeth that attach to them, so one dentist is responsible for the whole result. We place single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), and snap-in implant overdentures, plan each one on a 3D scan, and do the extractions and bone grafting that often come first. Here is how an implant usually unfolds, and what it means for the drive from Clay County.

How a dental implant usually unfolds, step by step
StepWhat happensWhat it means for the drive
1. Exam and 3D planningA full exam, photos, and a 3D cone beam scan of bone, nerves, and sinusesUsually done at your first visit, about two hours
2. Extraction and grafting, if neededA failing tooth comes out and bone is rebuilt where it is thinOften combined with the next step when it is safe
3. Implant placementThe implant is placed, and we plan how any gap is covered while it healsOne longer appointment
4. HealingBone bonds to the implant, usually over a few monthsNo trips needed unless something comes up
5. The final tooth or teethImpressions or scans, then the crown, bridge, or full arch is fitted to the implantShort visits, scheduled close together

One tooth

A single implant replaces one tooth without cutting down its neighbors. Compare the choices in dental bridge vs implant and the implant options table.

A whole arch: All-on-X

All-on-X is a full arch of teeth screwed to several implants that only the dentist removes. It feels and chews far more like natural teeth than any denture, and each implant is planned on the 3D scan.

Questions to ask first

Who places the implant, who makes the tooth, and can the tooth be saved instead? See our questions to ask any implant office.

Implant fees

We give you the implant fee in writing before anything begins. Read what affects implant fees and the dental implant FAQ.

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years.1 Radiation to the jaws, some bone medications, uncontrolled diabetes, and heavy smoking change the risk, and we explain alternatives. Read about osteoporosis medications and dental health.

Dentures for Orange Park and Fleming Island patients

Dentures that stay put: relines, new dentures, and snap-in overdentures.

We make new complete and partial dentures and reline dentures in our office. If your denture rocks, rubs, or drops when you talk, the fix may be a reline, a new denture, a snap-in overdenture that clips onto two or more implants, or fixed All-on-X teeth. We look at your gums, bone, and bite and tell you plainly which fits.

  1. Reline

Gums shrink over time. A reline refits the denture to them, and is often the simplest fix.

  2. New denture or partial

When teeth are worn or the bite has collapsed, a new denture restores how you look and chew.

  3. Snap-in overdenture

Two or more implants hold a lower denture firmly, and it still comes out to clean.

  4. Fixed full-arch teeth

All-on-X teeth stay in all the time; see the All-on-X case below.

A broken denture is one of the emergencies we see the same day during office hours. Call 904.398.1549 first, and bring every piece.

Emergency dentist for Orange Park and Fleming Island

Same-day dental emergencies for Clay County, if you call first.

If you have a toothache, a chipped or broken tooth, a lost crown, swelling, a loose implant crown, or a broken denture, call 904.398.1549 as early in the day as you can. We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, including new patients. Visits are call-first, not walk-in, so we can hold a chair and guide you on the half-hour drive from Orange Park or Fleming Island.

What we see the same day

A bad toothache, a broken or cracked tooth, a lost crown, filling, or veneer, an abscess or swelling, a knocked-out tooth, and broken dentures or loose implant crowns.

After hours

We don’t have weekend hours. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616, after hours. New patients should follow the first-aid steps on our after-hours page and call 904.398.1549 when we open.

Go to an ER first if

you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling near the eye or down the neck, a fever with facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop with pressure, or a possible broken jaw. On Fleming Island, the Baptist & Wolfson Clay emergency room (1771 Baptist Clay Drive) is open 24 hours a day for adults and children, and HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital on Kingsley Avenue has an emergency department. Call 911 if breathing is affected, then call us about the tooth. See ER or dentist?

Real patients from our San Marco office

Full-arch implants, a fall, and simple bonding: three of our own patients.

One patient had no upper teeth, one injured the front teeth in a fall, and one only needed bonding. The right answer depends on the mouth in front of us. Drag each slider to compare before and after.

After: All-on-X implant-supported full zirconia hybrid bridges Before: no upper teeth

All-on-X full-arch implants

No upper teeth. Six implants in each jaw, planned with 3D imaging and a surgical guide, now hold fixed zirconia bridges that stay in place. Read the full case.

After: four upper front teeth replaced with a fixed bridge Before: upper front teeth damaged in a fall and held together with a wire splint

Rebuilding the front teeth after a fall

Four front teeth held together with a wire splint were too damaged to save. They were removed and replaced with a fixed porcelain-fused-to-zirconia bridge. Read the full case.

After: composite bonding and recontoured, rounded edges for a younger-looking smile Before: chipped, worn upper front teeth with squared-off corners

Simple bonding for a younger-looking smile

No crowns or veneers needed. Composite bonding repaired the chips and rounding the squared-off corners made the teeth look younger. Read the full case.

Cosmetic dentistry for Orange Park patients

Cosmetic dentistry for Orange Park: previewed first, made by a named ceramist.

Our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions, from a mock-up you approve in your own mouth before any tooth is prepared. Veneers usually take about three visits over about a month, scheduled so you aren’t crossing the Buckman Bridge for small steps.

Porcelain veneers

See the veneer process and porcelain veneers.

Veneer and crown redos

Restorations that look bulky, opaque, or too white can be redone; see veneer redos and second opinions.

Whitening and bonding

Teeth whitening and composite bonding often get you there with far less treatment.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners straighten teeth without brackets. Read our approach to cosmetic dentistry.

When your health is part of the dental plan

Worn teeth, head and neck cancer, and medically complex dental care.

Some of our Orange Park and Fleming Island patients come because their health is part of the dental plan. If you face cancer treatment, take medications that affect bone or bleeding, or live with a condition that makes dentistry harder, the plan has to fit your medical care, and we work with your physicians wherever they practice.

Head and neck cancer dental care

Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises a dental visit about a month before cancer treatment starts.2 See head and neck cancer dental care, dry mouth, and jaw stiffness after radiation.

Medically complex patients

Blood thinners, bone medications, diabetes, and transplants change the plan. Read about complex and medically involved care and physician referrals.

Worn teeth and grinding

Teeth worn short by grinding (bruxism) are rebuilt with crowns or bonding and protected with a night guard.

Exams, anxiety, children, and Spanish

A comprehensive exam includes an oral cancer screening. Oral sedation is available for some anxious patients. We see patients from age 2 to 102, and Spanish is spoken in our office.

Your first visit

Making the first visit count when you’re driving in from Clay County.

New patients are scheduled for about two hours: roughly an hour with Dr. Henley and an hour in hygiene, adjusted to what you need. You leave knowing what we found, your options, and the fee, so the next trip is for treatment.

  1. Tell us why you’re coming

An implant consultation, a loose denture, and a toothache start differently. Fill out our new-patient forms before the day.

  2. History and exam

Medications, your physicians, and a full exam of teeth, gums, bite, and old work.

  3. Photos and imaging

X-rays, and 3D imaging when a question needs it, such as implant planning.

  4. A written plan and fee

Findings, alternatives, and the order of treatment, before anything begins.

Cost and insurance

What will it cost, and do you take my insurance?

Fees depend on what you need. We give you the fee before treatment begins, so nothing is a surprise.

We are an out-of-network practice. Some dental plans cover part of crowns, implants, dentures, and emergency visits, often with a frequency limit; purely cosmetic treatment is usually not covered. We can help you understand how to use your benefits; you are responsible for amounts your plan does not pay. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees and payment arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Orange Park and Fleming Island patients.

Is your office in Orange Park?

No. We are in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207, just off Emerson Street. From Orange Park it is about 16 miles, and from Fleming Island about 20 to 22 miles, across the Buckman Bridge.

How long is the drive from Orange Park?

About 27 to 30 minutes without traffic, by I-295 east over the Buckman Bridge and San Jose Boulevard north to Hendricks Avenue. Allow more time at rush hour, when the Buckman Bridge is busiest.

How long is the drive from Fleming Island?

About 34 minutes from Eagle Harbor and about 38 minutes from the Fleming Island Town Center without traffic, by US 17 north to I-295, the Buckman Bridge, and San Jose Boulevard.

Why would I drive past Orange Park dentists to see you?

Usually for work that takes planning: dental implants placed and restored by one dentist, dentures and snap-in overdentures that stay in, a second opinion on failing crowns and bridges, or care around cancer treatment and medical conditions. For routine cleanings, a closer office may suit you, and we will say so.

Do you place dental implants yourself?

Yes. Dr. Henley places dental implants and restores them in our office, including single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), snap-in implant overdentures, and extractions with bone grafting, so one dentist is responsible for the implant and the tooth on it. If a case is better handled elsewhere, we tell you and coordinate the referral.

How many trips does a dental implant take?

Usually a first visit with 3D planning, one longer appointment to place the implant (with any extraction or grafting), a few months of healing with few or no visits, and then short visits for the final tooth. We schedule the steps close together for patients driving in from Clay County.

How long do dental implants last?

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, radiation to the jaws, some bone medications, and grinding change the risk, so we review your health and protect the result with checkups and a night guard when it is needed.

My denture won’t stay in. What are my options?

A reline may be enough if your gums have shrunk. If the denture is worn or the bite has collapsed, a new denture helps. If dentures never stay in, a snap-in overdenture held by two or more implants, or fixed All-on-X teeth, may be the answer. We explain which fits and why.

Do you make dentures and do relines in your office?

Yes. We make new complete and partial dentures and reline dentures in our office, and we repair broken dentures as an emergency during office hours.

Is there an emergency dentist for Orange Park and Fleming Island that sees new patients the same day?

We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome. Please call 904.398.1549 first rather than walking in, as early in the day as you can, so we can hold time for you and tell you what to do on the drive.

What if I have a dental emergency at night or on a weekend?

Go to an ER for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever with swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. New patients should use first-aid steps and call 904.398.1549 when we open. We don’t have weekend hours.

Which ER is closest if I’m on Fleming Island or in Orange Park?

The Baptist & Wolfson Clay emergency room at 1771 Baptist Clay Drive on Fleming Island is open 24 hours a day for adults and children. HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital on Kingsley Avenue also has an emergency department. Call 911 if breathing is affected.

Do you do porcelain veneers?

Yes. Our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions, from a mock-up you approve before any tooth is prepared. Veneers usually take about three visits over about a month.

Can you fix crowns and bridges that keep failing?

Yes. We find out why they fail, whether decay, gums, bite, or grinding, and rebuild in a sensible order, sometimes a whole arch at once with crowns, bridges, or implants. A second-opinion exam doesn’t commit you to treatment.

Do you treat patients going through head and neck cancer treatment?

Yes. Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson and sees patients before, during, and after radiation and chemotherapy. Ideally we see you about a month before treatment begins.

Do you see children, and does anyone speak Spanish?

Yes to both. We see patients from age 2 to 102, so Orange Park and Fleming Island families can come together, and Spanish is spoken in our office. Se habla español.

Do you take my insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice and can help you understand how to use your benefits. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees before scheduling. We give you the fee for any treatment before it begins.

Which Clay County areas and zip codes do you serve?

We see patients from Orange Park (32073 and 32065), Fleming Island (32003), Oakleaf (32065), Middleburg (32068), and Green Cove Springs (32043), plus Mandarin, San Marco, and the rest of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
