CJ Henley, DMD, PA   /   San Marco, Jacksonville   /   Serving the Southside

A Southside dentist for Baymeadows, Deerwood, and Town Center.
Implants, dentures, redos, and same-day emergencies.

Our office is in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, not on the Southside itself, but for most of Baymeadows, Deerwood, and the St. Johns Town Center area it is a 13- to 17-minute drive without traffic, mostly on Butler Boulevard and I-95. Southside patients come to us for implants one dentist places and restores, new dentures and relines, crown and veneer redos, worn teeth, and care that fits a complicated medical history. In a dental emergency, call first: we see emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome.

Existing patients after hours: call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. Se habla español.

Southside to San Marco

Why Southside and Baymeadows patients come to San Marco.

The Southside has dozens of dental offices, many in shopping centers along Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard. Patients who drive to us are usually looking for something specific: implants and the teeth that go on them from one dentist, dentures made and relined in the same office, a second opinion on crowns or veneers, or a dentist who can work around cancer treatment or a serious medical condition.

Be realistic about geography first. “Southside” covers a big piece of Jacksonville, from University Boulevard and Beach Boulevard in the north, through Baymeadows and Deerwood, to The Avenues near the Mandarin line. We are about 3 miles from its north end and 11 from The Avenues; most of Baymeadows, Deerwood, and Town Center sit at roughly 9 to 10.

What makes the drive worth it is the kind of dentistry. Dr. Henley is a general dentist whose day is mostly restorative and complex work: dental implants he places and then restores himself, full-arch implant teeth, crowns and bridges that failed elsewhere, and dentistry for people whose health makes treatment harder. Patients come from across Florida and other states for that work, so a trip up I-95 from Baymeadows is short by comparison.

An honest note: if your teeth are healthy and you need a cleaning twice a year, a Southside dentist five minutes from your home or office park may suit you better. Plenty of our Southside patients do their implant or restorative work here and keep a closer dentist for routine care. Others make our general and family dentistry their dental home for the whole family.

Dental implants for Southside patients

Dental implants placed and restored by the same dentist.

Dr. Henley places dental implants and makes the crowns, bridges, and full-arch teeth that attach to them, so one dentist is responsible for the whole result. We place single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch implant teeth (All-on-X), and snap-in implant overdentures, and we do the extractions and bone grafting that often come first.

One tooth

A single implant replaces one tooth without cutting down the healthy teeth on either side, which a bridge requires. Compare the two in dental bridge vs implant and the implant options table.

A whole arch, fixed (All-on-X)

Several implants hold a full arch of teeth that is screwed in place and never comes out at night. See the before and after case below.

A snap-in implant overdenture

Two or more implants hold a denture that snaps in and comes out to clean. For a loose lower denture it is often a big gain in stability with less surgery than a fixed arch. More in dentures below.

Extractions and bone grafting

Bone shrinks after a tooth comes out; one review of human studies found ridge width fell about 29 to 63 percent within six to seven months.2 When an implant is planned, bone grafting at the extraction visit helps keep room for it.

How an implant case runs when you live on the Southside

Most implant cases take several visits over a few months while bone heals around the implant. We keep the long appointments few, and you get a written sequence and fee before anything starts.

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years.1 Implants are not right for everyone: radiation to the jaws, some bone medications, uncontrolled diabetes, and heavy smoking change the risk, and we explain alternatives such as a bridge or a well-made denture. Read about osteoporosis medications and dental health.

  1. Exam and 3D scan

A comprehensive exam and cone beam 3D imaging show bone height, width, nerves, and sinuses.

  2. Extraction and grafting, if needed

Teeth that can’t be saved come out, and the socket is grafted when an implant will follow.

  3. Implant placement

Guided by the 3D plan, often with a surgical guide. A temporary tooth or denture keeps you presentable.

  4. The final teeth

Once healed, Dr. Henley makes the crown, bridge, overdenture, or full arch. See the full implant process.

Dentures for Baymeadows and the Southside

New dentures, partials, and relines made in one office.

We make new complete and partial dentures and reline dentures in our office, so the dentist who checks your bite is the one adjusting the fit. If a denture won’t stay in, the answer may be a reline, a new denture, a snap-in implant overdenture, or fixed implant teeth, and we explain which suits your gums, bone, and budget.

Complete dentures

For a jaw with no teeth left, shaped to your gums and bite and set up so the teeth look like yours. It comes out at night to be cleaned and kept moist.3

Partial dentures

For a few missing teeth when implants or a bridge aren’t the right fit. A partial clips to your remaining teeth, so we make sure those teeth are healthy first.

In-office relines

The jawbone under a denture keeps shrinking, so even a well-made denture loosens over the years.3 A reline reshapes the fitting surface to your gums as they are now. We do relines in our office.

Repairs

A cracked or broken denture is one of the problems we see the same day during office hours. Bring every piece and skip the drugstore glue. See broken dentures and loose implant crowns.

Common denture problems and what usually fixes them
What you noticeUsual causeWhat we usually suggest
The denture slips, clicks, or needs more adhesive each yearThe ridge under it has shrunkA reline, or a new denture if the teeth are worn too
Sore spots after eatingPressure points or a bite that is offAn adjustment, then a reline if the fit is the problem
A lower denture that floats no matter whatLittle ridge left and a moving tongueA snap-in implant overdenture on two or more implants
You want teeth that never come outA removable denture can’t do thatFixed full-arch implant teeth (All-on-X)
A partial that rocks or hurts a toothClasp teeth that have changedCheck the teeth, then repair, reline, or remake the partial

Because Dr. Henley also places and restores implants, your denture visit can cover every option, and we will tell you plainly when a reline or new denture is the sensible answer rather than surgery.

Crowns, veneers, and worn teeth

Crown and veneer redos, and teeth worn down by grinding.

A large share of the cosmetic work we do for Southside and Jacksonville patients is redoing dental work: veneers that look bulky or fake, crowns that don’t match, and front teeth worn short by grinding. We find out why it failed, show you a preview, and use hand-layered porcelain made by a named ceramist.

Veneers made by a named ceramist

Our porcelain veneers are layered e.max made by Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions, from a mock-up you approve before any tooth is prepared. If yours look wrong now, read why veneers look fake and how they are redone.

Crowns that look like crowns

A dark line at the gum, an opaque “cap” look, or a crown that keeps coming loose deserves a second opinion. Read why you might need a crown, what happens at a crown appointment, and why crown fees vary in Jacksonville.

Worn teeth and grinding

Teeth that get shorter and flatter every year are often a sign of teeth grinding (bruxism). We pair new porcelain with a custom night guard. Read what bruxism is.

The least invasive option first

Sometimes teeth whitening, composite bonding, or clear aligners gets the result without porcelain. More on our approach to cosmetic dentistry.

Real patients from our San Marco office

Before and after: a redo, veneers and crowns, and full-arch implants.

Three of our own patients: front restorations from another office that she was told couldn’t look better, front teeth damaged in childhood and restored with e.max crowns and veneers, and a patient with no upper teeth who now has fixed All-on-X teeth on both jaws. Drag the slider on each photo to compare.

After: new porcelain-fused-to-zirconia bridge with natural emergence, translucency, and surface detail Before: bulky, opaque upper front restorations

A second-opinion redo

Her front restorations from another office looked bulky and opaque, and she was told they couldn’t look better. A new porcelain-fused-to-zirconia bridge with natural emergence, translucency, and surface texture proved otherwise. Read the full case.

After: e.max crowns and veneers with natural light reflection and the gap closed Before: discolored, mismatched upper front teeth with a gap after childhood dental trauma

e.max crowns and veneers

Childhood trauma had left her front teeth discolored and mismatched, with a gap. The two front teeth got e.max crowns and their neighbors e.max veneers, so color and translucency match across the smile and the gap between the front teeth closed. Read the full case.

After: All-on-X implant-supported full zirconia hybrid bridges Before: no upper teeth

All-on-X on both jaws

This patient had no upper teeth. Six implants in each jaw, planned in 3D with a surgical guide, now hold fixed full-zirconia bridges: no adhesive and no plate over the palate. Read the full case.

More cases are in our before and after gallery and the longer write-ups in case studies.

Emergency dentist for the Southside

Same-day dental emergencies, if you call first.

If you have a toothache, a broken tooth, a lost crown, swelling, or a broken denture, call 904.398.1549 as early in the day as you can. We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, including new patients. Emergency visits are call-first, not walk-in, so we can hold a chair and tell you what to do on the drive in from the Southside.

What we see the same day

A bad toothache, a broken or cracked tooth, a lost crown, filling, or veneer, an abscess or swelling, a knocked-out tooth, and broken dentures or loose implant crowns. Our same-day emergency visit page explains what happens when you arrive.

After hours

We don’t have routine weekend hours. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616, after hours. New patients should follow the first-aid steps on our after-hours page and call 904.398.1549 when we open.

Go to an ER first if

you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling near the eye or down the neck, a fever with facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop with pressure, or a possible broken jaw. On the Southside, 24-hour emergency rooms include HCA Florida Memorial Hospital (3625 University Boulevard South), Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside (4201 Belfort Road), UF Health Emergency and Urgent Care Center – Baymeadows (11251 Lamb Tail Lane), and the Baptist and Wolfson Town Center ER (4085 Town Center Parkway). Once you are stable, call us about the tooth. See ER or dentist?

For a knocked-out adult tooth, minutes matter: keep it in milk, follow the knocked-out tooth steps, and call from the car.

When your health is part of the plan

Complex, medically involved, and head and neck cancer dental care.

Many of our patients from Jacksonville’s Southside are managing more than their teeth. If you are facing head and neck cancer treatment, taking medications that affect the jaw, or living with a condition that makes dentistry harder, your dental plan has to fit your medical one.

Head and neck cancer dental care

Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises a dental visit about a month before cancer treatment starts.4 We see patients before, during, and after head and neck cancer treatment, including dry mouth and jaw stiffness after radiation.

Medically complex patients

Blood thinners, bone medications, diabetes, and transplants change how treatment is planned. We review your medications and work with your physicians; read about complex and medically involved care and physician referrals.

Comprehensive exams and 3D imaging

A comprehensive dental exam covers teeth, gums, bite, old dental work, and an oral cancer screening, with 3D imaging when a question needs it.

Anxiety, children, and Spanish

Oral sedation is available for some anxious patients; read how we approach anxious patients. We see patients from age 2 to 102, including children, and Spanish is spoken in our office. For unusual sores or pain, see oral medicine and diagnosis.

Your first visit

What to expect as a new patient from the Southside.

New patients are scheduled for about two hours: roughly an hour with Dr. Henley and an hour in hygiene, adjusted to what you need. You leave knowing what we found, your options, and the fee for anything we recommend.

  1. Tell us why you’re coming

Fill out our new-patient forms before the day.

  2. History and exam

Medical history, medications, and a full exam of teeth, gums, bite, and old dental work.

  3. Imaging that answers a question

X-rays and photos, and 3D cone beam imaging for implant planning.

  4. A written plan and fee

Findings, alternatives, and the order of treatment, before anything begins.

Cost and insurance

What will it cost, and do you take my insurance?

Fees depend on what you need. We give you the fee before treatment begins, so nothing is a surprise.

We are an out-of-network practice. Some dental plans cover part of implants, dentures, crowns, and emergency visits, often with a frequency limit. We can help you understand how to use your benefits; you are responsible for amounts your plan does not pay. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees and payment arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Southside and Baymeadows patients.

Is your office on the Southside?

No. We are in San Marco at 3675 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207, just off Emerson Street. From most of Baymeadows, Deerwood, and the Town Center area it is about 9 to 10 miles, and from the north end of the Southside near University Boulevard it is about 3.

How long is the drive from Baymeadows or Deerwood?

About 13 minutes from Baymeadows Road at Southside Boulevard and 14 minutes from Deerwood at Gate Parkway, by I-95 north to Emerson Street, without traffic. From St. Johns Town Center it is about 17 minutes. Allow more time at rush hour on Butler Boulevard and I-95.

Why would I drive past Southside dentists to see you?

Usually for work that takes planning: implants placed and restored by one dentist, dentures made and relined in the same office, redos of crowns or veneers, worn teeth, or care around cancer treatment and medical conditions. For routine cleanings, a closer office may suit you, and we will say so.

Is there an emergency dentist near the Southside that sees new patients the same day?

Yes. We see dental emergencies the same day during office hours, and new patients are welcome. Please call 904.398.1549 first rather than walking in, as early in the day as you can, so we can hold time for you and tell you what to do on the way.

What if I have a dental emergency at night or on a weekend?

Go to an ER for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever with swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop. Existing patients can call or text our on-call line, 904.762.5616. New patients should use first-aid steps and call 904.398.1549 when we open. We don’t have weekend hours.

Which ER is closest if I’m on the Southside?

Southside 24-hour emergency rooms include HCA Florida Memorial Hospital on University Boulevard South, Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside on Belfort Road, UF Health Emergency and Urgent Care Center – Baymeadows on Lamb Tail Lane, and the Baptist and Wolfson Town Center ER on Town Center Parkway. Call 911 if breathing is affected.

Do you place dental implants yourself?

Yes. Dr. Henley places dental implants and restores them in our office, so one dentist plans the surgery and the final teeth together. That includes single-tooth implants, fixed full-arch teeth (All-on-X), snap-in implant overdentures, and extractions with bone grafting. If a case is better handled elsewhere, we tell you and coordinate the referral.

What is the difference between All-on-X and a snap-in implant denture?

All-on-X is a full arch of teeth screwed to several implants; only the dentist removes it. A snap-in implant overdenture clips onto two or more implants and comes out daily for cleaning. Snap-in usually needs fewer implants and less surgery; fixed teeth feel most like your own. We show you both.

How long do dental implants last?

A 2019 review of long-term studies found about 96.4 percent of implants still in place after ten years. The crown or bridge attached to an implant can wear or chip and may need replacing sooner. Cleanings, not smoking, and a night guard if you grind all help.

Do you make new dentures and partials, and do you do relines?

Yes. We make new complete and partial dentures and reline dentures in our office. If your denture has loosened, a reline may be enough; if the teeth are worn or the fit is far off, a new denture, a snap-in overdenture, or fixed implant teeth may be better. We explain which and why.

Can you fix a broken denture the same day?

Often, yes. Denture repairs are one of the emergencies we see the same day during office hours. Bring every piece and don’t use super glue or a drugstore kit, which make a proper repair harder. If a denture keeps breaking, we look at the fit and bite.

Do you redo crowns or veneers placed by another dentist?

Yes, and it is a large part of our cosmetic work. We find out why the crowns or veneers look wrong or failed, whether bite, grinding, gums, or design, then show you a preview before anything is replaced. A second-opinion exam doesn’t commit you to treatment.

Who makes your porcelain veneers?

Our porcelain veneers are hand-layered e.max made by ceramist Paul Robert at Dynamic Dental Solutions, from a design you approve in a mock-up. Veneers usually take about three visits over about a month.

Can you rebuild teeth worn down by grinding?

Yes. We rebuild worn teeth with crowns, partial crowns, or bonding depending on how much tooth is left, and protect the result with a custom night guard. Without protection, grinding wears new porcelain too, so we treat the habit as part of the plan.

Do you treat patients going through head and neck cancer treatment?

Yes. Dr. Henley is a member of the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist MD Anderson and sees patients before, during, and after radiation and chemotherapy. Ideally we see you about a month before treatment begins. Tell us your treatment dates when you call.

Do you see children, and does anyone speak Spanish?

Yes to both. We see patients from age 2 to 102, so families from the Southside can come together, and Spanish is spoken in our office. Se habla español.

Do you take my insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice and can help you understand how to use your benefits. Call our team with your plan details to ask about fees before scheduling. We give you the fee for any treatment before it begins.

Which Southside neighborhoods and zip codes do you serve?

We see patients from all over the Southside, including Baymeadows, Deerwood, the St. Johns Town Center area, Tinseltown, Southpoint, and the University Boulevard area, in zip codes 32216, 32256, 32217, and 32246, plus Mandarin, San Jose, San Marco, and the rest of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
